On September 17,1944 thousands of paratroopers from the British,American and Polish Army's descended from the sky by parachute or glider up to 150 km behind enemy line in Holland
Their goal: To secure the bridges across the rivers in Holland...
Unfortunately this daring plan named Operation Market Garden,(Market for Airborne forces and Garden for any ground forces like tanks,soldiers)
The bridge at Arnhem proved to be 'a bridge too far'
After ten days of bitter fighting the operation ended with the evacuation of the remainder of the allied forces..
The urban combat in Arnhem and area was so fierce German veterans who had fought in Stalingrad said it was even worse in Arnhem...
Casualties:
7,414 dead or wounded soldiers
6,946 British Captured
Germany:
2,000 Killed
6,000 Wounded
Dutch civilian casualties is unknown.
I have visited most of the places where the fighting has took place,Arnhem,Oosterbeek.My grandma as a teenage girl has seen the operation happen when she lived in Nijmegen..
